English info on Peter Dyreborg
and the poetry slam scene in Denmark

Peter Dyreborg is a Danish author + spoken word poet and poetry slam performer, National Champion in January 2008. He was born in 1976 in Frederikshavn in northern Jutland, Denmark, and today he lives in Valby, Copenhagen, Denmark.

So far, he has published four collections of poetry in Danish (from 1998 to 2005), and two books with prose, Træfpunkt and Træfpunkt 2 in 2008 and 2009. He has also contributed to a series of literary periodicals and magazines, and has been active on the Danish spoken word and poetry slam scene since 1998.

His most significant publication is probably Bestseller from 2003, his third book, which was financed by advertising (advertisements for five companies) and printed in 3.000 copies, ten times the print run of a normal first edition of a collection of poetry in Denmark. All copies were given away for free all over Denmark, and the book received quite a bit of attention among readers as well as press coverage on both national and regional TV, radio and newspapers. His fourth publication, Pro Bono from 2005, was sponsored by a Danish bank, BG Bank (now called Danske Bank).

Poetry slam in Denmark

Poetry slam has existed in Denmark since 1998. It was started by the Danish poet Janus Kodal, and took place at Café Poeten on Jagtvej in Copenhagen. From there the Copenhagen scene moved on to Caféteatret, Kulcaféen, Ideal Bar and Huset in Magstræde, but single poetry slam events have been held at many other venues in Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark.

Today there are regular poetry slams at Huset in Magstræde in Copenhagen, and there are regular venues in Odense and Svendborg, coordinated by the association PS Fyn, which was founded by Kim Linnet and Peter Dyreborg. In Aarhus, the association Poetklub Aarhus holds regular poetry slam events, often in collaboration with Peter Dyreborg, and in Aalborg the local theater as well as the association 57Nord also holds poetry slam events, often in collaboration with Peter Dyreborg. In Esbjerg, Peter Dyreborg is helping local slammers establishing a regular venue at Huset.
